Stretching at the top of a Luberon hill, the charming village of Saignon is a small Provençal jewel. Between old houses, majestic doors and flowering squares, this is a place that smells of southern.
Travel between Little Luberon and the Claparèdes plateau, in the heart of Vaucluse. A postcard landscape stands in front of you when you access the delicious locality of Saignon, very close to Apt. Here, in this high village perched on its hill, it is as if the weather has interrupted.
The first axis of entry into this village of character is none other than the massive form that is distinguished in the distance. It is simply a massif rock, which one could take for a castle. This fortified rock block is nicknamed the Rocher de Bellevue.
A first wonder that hides a multitude of small nuggets not to be missed. The municipality being rich in a history that extends from prehistory to the present day. Antiquity, for example, remains the oppidum of Perréal, revealed during excavations. Under the direction of Julius Caesar, in 45 before Jesus Christ, the mound served as a resort to the Gallo-Romans. Villas were therefore erected there.
Castles, churches … The rich heritage of Saignon
Several castles then emerged in the sector during the Middle Ages. A territory passed in the hands of several nobles over the centuries. Today, we can notably talk about the areas of Valcroissant and Saint-Quentin. The first is made up of 16th century buildings. The second is more considered a sumptuous and elegant residence.
Beyond these two historical vestiges, other elements integrate the Saignon heritage, of which washhouses which were once the nerve center of life in the town.
There are also religious buildings, such as the Romanesque Church Notre-Dame-de-Pitié built between the 11th and the 12th century. And we are not insensitive to the remains of the Saint-Donat priory, out of the ground in 1134, or the magnificent Saint-Eusèbe abbey which dates back to the 7th century.
