By comparing nearly 450 French municipalities, Le Figaro has sought to identify cities offering the best conditions to age in good health. The departments of the Alpes-Maritimes and Var do not shine particularly in this list.
What is the ideal region to take advantage of a full -form retirement? It is to this question that Le Figaro tried to answer by establishing a hierarchy of French cities with more than 20,000 inhabitants (Corsica is not part of the study).
To carry out this ranking, journalists analyzed the data of 449 municipalities across France in 2023.
The evaluation is based on 22 criteria, including the quality of the environment, the supply of medical care, the level of sedentary lifestyle, the prevalence of diseases linked to aging (cancers, neurodegenerative conditions, etc.), the proportion of sports licensees over the age of 60, as well as life expectancy.
These various indicators were then divided into five main categories: pollution, the frequency of serious illnesses, accessibility to health professionals, longevity and practice of physical activity by seniors.
Each city is allocated five average notes, which make it possible to establish a first classification. Then, the relative position in each category defines the final classification.

At the top of the 2023 list, Rodez (Aveyron) stands out thanks to his excellent treatment of care. Second place returns to Auch (Gers), which is distinguished by a strong involvement of retirees in physical activity. Cahors, in the lot, completes the podium, in particular thanks to its network of health establishments related to its population.
By browsing this classification, we note that the cities of South East are sub-represented in the Top 20. Only Gap (Hautes-Alpes), 14th, represents the southern region.
If we focus on the French Riviera and more particularly the Alpes-Maritimes, we see that Grasse (65th) and Antibes (88th) are among the best classified cities in the department.
Behind, we find Mandelieu- La- Napoule (103rd), Saint-Laurent-Du- Var (106th) and Menton (115th). It is then necessary to descend clearly in the ranking to see Cannes (147th) and Cagnes-sur-Mer (164th), while Nice ranks outside the Top 200 (219th), followed closely by the Cannet (231st).
The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture suffers in particular from its level of pollution (440th place), although its care offer remains correct (73rd).
It is interesting to note that Nice was previously considered to be one of the “best places” where to spend his retirement, according to a study of SeLoger.com. An anchored perception, but which deserved to be nuanced, as we had explained in January. Conversely, the previous survey of Figaro On the subject had not already put the French Riviera forward.
In the Var department, the best classified city is Hyères (144th), followed by Saint-Raphaël (181st) and Draguignan (198th). Toulon, on the other hand, is among the last 100 municipalities, occupying the 351st place, in particular because of the low sports rate among seniors.
